Libraries are a vital resource for everyone, but did you know that they also provide important resources for the LGBTQ community? During this Pride month and beyond, check out our LGBTQ resource guide and visit your local library to access: 

Inclusive Collections – Libraries provide a range of books and other materials that represent diverse experiences, identities, and cultures: from children’s books that teach about different family structures, non-fiction books and novels that explore the complexities of coming out, to DVDs of the most recent LGBTQ movies, libraries provide access to a variety of LGBTQ materials. Perhaps most importantly, libraries have stories that include LGBTQ characters, letting readers see themselves represented in literature.

Safe Spaces – Libraries are for everyone: they are safe, welcoming spaces for LGBTQ people and have policies in place that ensure that their patrons are included, respected, and safe from harassment. 

Educational Programs – Libraries provide programming that promotes understanding and acceptance of the LGBTQ community, like author talks, story hours, or book clubs focused on LGBTQ literature, and more. 

Resources and Support – Libraries provide resources beyond books, like information about local LGBTQ organizations, mental health resources, or support groups. 

Advocacy – Libraries advocate for equality, diversity, and inclusivity: libraries celebrate Pride Month with special displays or events, or by standing up against censorship of LGBTQ books.
